The alarms were blaring and I crouched behind a wall clutching my awesome new prize. I pulled my scarf from around it and grinned at the gleaming gold bust of some old woman. Yeah, I stole it. Real gold. But I wasn't after the stupid metal; I was after what was inside the bust. Something no person could ever think to be inside of this piece of junk. Honestly, I'm not even sure what's in it. I just read somewhere that this thing held something way more valuable than the gold that encased it and I searched around for tons of busts just like this one but they weren't the real thing.
I peered around the corner and spotted security guards running my way. These guys made me laugh. They were sorry excuses for security. I turned the other way and quietly, but quickly, escaped the corridor. I entered a whole new one, empty and everything and ran through it. I made a left and then a right before I hit a dead end. That's when I heard the clattering of shiny boots and shoes behind me. I looked up and found a vent. I looked back, seeing the officers, armed. Their guns pointed right at me.
"Freeze!" One of them barked the order.
I smirked and ran at the wall shoving my foot into it, causing myself to fly back at the crowd of policemen. I thrust my hand out at one of them and grabbed him by the face and shoved him away. I spun kicked the next guy who came at my and grabbed the wrist of the third, disarming him and using his gun against the other guards. I fired but I intentionally missed everyone. I only wanted to scare 'em. I was no killer.
I jumped back to the vent and threw up my palm towards it. The vent blasted off of its bolts and clattered loudly to the floor. I looked back to the dazed officers and chuckled before jumping up and into the ventilation system. Crawling through the cramped airways, I moved quietly and quickly, listening to the sound of panicked guards who had lost their criminal. I wanted to burst out into laughter so bad, but that would have been very bad for me.
It wasn't too long before the vent sectioned off into a long descent and I knew I had found a way out of. I headed too it fast and slid down the shaft, feet first and kicked open the air vent, sending it flying a few feet before it clattered loudly to the ground.
I turned quickly and saw a ton of guards had averted there attention to me. "You there! Stop!" One of them yelled as the group rushed in my direction. Of course I didn't listen. I had to get up out.
I turned the other way and grabbed hold of the vent box and began to climb to the top of the museum. Yeah I was stealing from one of those but, who cares, right? I mean it's a pretty cruddy one and barely anyone shows up. I heard they were closing down and why not just help them clean it out faster by nabbing just one item?
I looked down to see the guards working quickly as they called in the real police. It was the elite force too. They were no joke. They strapped on their flight packs and raced up the building much faster than I. I cursed under my breath and leaned back, digging my fingers into the brick wall. Within an instant I had launched myself to the top, about several hundred feet in the air. I glanced around at the troops as I went plummeting back down to the roof top.
Once I landed, I left a me-sized crater in the roof and started off sprinting towards the edge of the building. I leapt to the next one with much more ease than the last few time I had tried it. But the officers were still on my tail. They were following close behind and their packs didn't seem to be anywhere close to running out of... whatever it was that they ran on. As I leapt from building to building, I ducked under and pipe, avoided clothes lines, missed ventilation exhausted and jumped the water tanks.
The guys behind me weren't as awesome as me. Some of them hit almost everything. There numbers dwindled, leaving me an easy escape but, the leader of the pack wasn't easily shaken. He kept a straight face. Every time I looked his expression was always the same. I looked straight ahead and saw that I ran out of roof tops to land on. I smirked, and I turned around and jogged backwards. I saluted the last few guys as I fell off the building almost a hundred feet below.
I hit the ground running, thinking I could make a brake for the harbor. The fuzz shot straight past me but, I watched as they tried to maneuver their way back around. I hastily ran across the dock and into the dark, murky waters and swam to the bottom where I held my breath. They'd probably be waiting at the top, those dumbos might have thought I had nowhere to go by now.
I swam deeper into the harbor until I got to pretty big boulder lodged into the thick muddy wall. I forced it away, clearing and hole to my secret escape route and swam inside, pulling the boulder back with me. I continued on though the water cave quickly, knowing that I'd eventually need to come out for air.
The dark tunnels transcended into light as I neared my destination, coming into more crystal clear blue waters. The bust in my scarf bumped against my back as I rushed towards the top of the lake, swimming past fish, breaking though the line of lily pads at the surface.
I came out gasping for air, sinking my fingers into the dirt as I stepped out of the river and onto the bank, dripping warm water. My muscles were tense and I was ready to collapse in the muddy dirt until I heard the locking of guns.
My heart stopped as I looked up. I was surrounded by familiar looking soldiers that I could never, in my life, forget. Their uniforms had changed slightly since I had last seen them with. Their suits were jet black with circuit board designs. They wore helmets with visors and their armor looked much lighter than before. All of their guns were pointed at me.
I looked passed them to find the place that I had escaped to had been completely destroyed. It was a little village encampment where I helped homeless people and orphans get away to and supplied them with better living. But what I was looking at wasn't any better than from where I rescued them. The place was trashed. Fire blazed across the fields where we planted crops and tent houses were either torn down or were plagued by small fires. Beaten bodies lay here and there.
There were soldiers everywhere, spotting the hideout. Behind the ones that had their guns on me were the rest of the villagers that hadn’t been killed. Children cried for their moms or dads who had probably been shot, beat or killed. Mothers or the elderly tried to keep them quiet as two soldiers stood by them, guns pointed and ready.
I frowned deeply, glowering up at the soldiers who kept their sights on me.
"Subject 0956, come quietly or bare the consequences." The guy ahead of me snapped.
"Like cheese I will." I grumbled darkly, not moving.
The soldier nodded to one of his comrades standing next to the group of hostages. He nodded back and took out a smaller gun, a pistol, and aimed it at an old man, one of the elderly. He had no kids or family here but he was still a person and people did like him. The soldier took no hesitation to shoot a bullet through his head. This caused the rest of the people to break into panic.
"What are you doing!?" I yelled. "They've got nothing to do with this!!"
"Gunner!!" I heard the cry of a little girl shout my name. It was Hailey. She was the youngest medical assistant in the village at the age of 10. And she was my best friend. The soldier then put his gun to her head, finger pressed against the trigger.
"Come with us, or the rest of these people will die." What I assumed to be the leader warned. "You have 4 seconds to comply... 4"
I didn't move. I looked from Hailey to the guy and weighed my options. I couldn't go back with these creeps. I wouldn't. Nothing in the world would get me to go back there. But, I wasn't about to just let these people die.
I had to do something fast.
…Even if it meant going to extremes.
I heard Hailey's scream and I shut my eyes tight, blasting out of the water. I shot past the guys that were surround the river bank and took out the soldiers around the hostages, grabbing them by their heads and slammed them together brutally. I don't think they'd be getting up again.
I rushed at the guys still standing by the river, there rifles firing at me by this time. There bullets weren't much to me as I grabbed one of the dude's arm and yanked the gun out of his grasp before shoving my feet into his face. He went flying into the river.
Quickly I turned back to the rest of the troops and shoved a fist into one of the guy's gut. I grabbed him by the shoulders and threw his body at his friends. They all went down into the dirt. I turned back to the leader and watched as he started to run away, gathering up his remaining squad.
"Oh, no ya don't." I hissed, running after the guy. I grabbed him by his neck and slammed his face into the ground, letting him eat up all the delicious dirt he could get. Then I pulled him up and flung him near the burning field.
Near, not into.
The other guys ran, screaming for their lives. I let them go as I walked towards the head honcho as calmly as I possibly could. He was trying to get up, spitting out rocks, dirt and possibly teeth. I knelt beside him and snatched him up roughly by the collar. "So, all these years and you decided to come looking for me now, huh? What’s that about?" I demanded jerking his neck around. "What happened? Did Semyon get bored over there with his little toys? Tired of experimenting with little girls, Huh? Huh?!"
The guys started whimpering. "Please..." he sobbed. “I was only following orders... Don't... Don't kill me... please."
I didn't feel the slightest sympathy for this guy as I jerked his head the other way. He didn't care about the people he killed so, why should I spare him. "Tell me what's going on. "I demanded through gritted teeth. The guys sobbed some more, about to answer but, before he could, a little beeping sound went off. It was coming from him.
"What's that?" I asked him. But he wouldn't answer. "What is it?!" I yelled reaching into one of his vest pockets, looking for the noise. I searched until I pulled out a shining, silver, device that looked like a type of pager. I turned it over in my hand to the screen that showed a map. On it, a red dot blinked repeatedly to the sound of the beeping noise. The location was very familiar. It was around a facility that I used to… “play in” when I was a kid. I looked at the soldier and showed him the device.
"Tell me, what's going on. Now!"
"It's classified." The guy respired deeply. I sighed and shook my head knowing this wasn't going anywhere. I raised my fist and the guy's eyes widened. "No! No, no, no, no nn--!"
My fist lodged right into his face and the guy was unconscious. Not dead. Though, I think I probably broke his nose.
I dropped the guy and stood up and took a look around. The place was a mess. I scowled, watching little Hailey come over slowly looking towards the soldier at my feet. I nodded at her, letting her know it was safe and she came trotting over quickly.
"Where are the others?" I asked her, not seeing a few of the kids.
"They went to go look for you when the guys in suits came out." She answered as she fumbled with her thumbs. Then she looked up at me frowning. "What's going on? And who are these guys?" She asked.
"A bad memory..." I sighed as I nudged the leader with my foot. I turned, picked up the unconscious killer by the back of his collar and began walking to the edge of the clearing, heading for the forest.
"What is that thing?" Hailey asked pointing to the littler beeper in my hand.
I stared at it. "Your guess is as good as mine. Nat would know but I’m just going to say that it’s some type of tracker."
"Yeah, you're probably right."
Then I stopped and turned to Hailey. Her messy light brown hair covered up her unhappy face. "Listen. Gather up everyone and tend to anyone who could be hurt. Get the remaining men to put out the fire. When the boys get back, have them fix anything broken and tell them we're gonna have a long chat."
"Okay." She nodded. "Where are you going?"
I held up the device and tossed it up, and catching it. "Looks like I'm not the only one these jerks were after. I'm going to go see what's up and make sure this doesn't happen again."
"Oh... guess there's no stopping you..."
"I'll be back, kid. Just remember my instructions. Oh, and I almost forgot." I reached for my now damp scarf that was wrapped around my waist and pulled it off. I handed her the bust all nice and wrapped up and tossed it to her. "Take this back to my place."
"What is it?" Hailey asked, weighing it with her hands as she shook it.
"Probably nothing. I'll be back."
"Be safe." She reminded.
"Like always." I sighed as I walked off.
I grumbled as I felt myself heat up. I looked at my arm and it started turning white. I tensed up the muscles I wasn't using until pain started to strike my body. But before I knew it, the pain was gone and I was in a completely different location.
I was now in the hot and humid jungle, dragging some guy around that I didn’t want to know. You could say that I just teleported I guess. I call it walking. Really. It was something I mastered ages ago when I was a test subject. It's not a big deal anymore.
I grabbed Mr. Soldier near a pond and thrust his head into it until her started struggling and kicking. I tore his head from the water with him sputtering and choking. I threw his against a tree and looked at the device once again. I had gotten closer to the dot which means that I was right about the location; the old facility where I was kept before I got out.
"So, I'm going to ask you one more time." I cautioned, shoving the locater in his face. "What is it tracking?" At first he didn't respond so I raised a fist on him again.
"No, no! Please not that again!" He pleaded, covering his face with his arms.
I lowered my fist and waited for the answer.
"Early this morning.... a girl went crazy..." He said breathing hard. "She trashed a bunch of bots and took down tons of soldiers. My troops were only briefed this morning about it. We've been on your trail for months, I swear!"
I twisted up my mouth and stared at the guy. I only half believed him. I know that Semyon, the guy in charge of these losers, had given up on me way before I left. He wouldn't have been looking for me all this time unless circumstances had changed. "Whatever..." I grumbled picking up the guy and tossing him into the pond. I headed on my way after that. He could go crawling back to headquarters if he wanted. I didn’t care.
I followed the locater to the target. It seemed to be moving, but slowly. Either they had this girl or she was on the move. Either way, I wasn't going to waste time and let her get taken back, so I rushed on a head through the thick tangle of jungle.
It didn't take long before I made it to a group of soldiers. They stood around like they were waiting for something to happen. As I drew closer, I tried shutting off the noise for the device, slapping it with my hand. I didn't really know what to do with it. Tech wasn't my thing.
I cursed as I shoved the thing at a tree, causing one of the soldier's attentions to turn in my direction. I quickly crouched down behind the vines—the device having gone quiet. That didn't exactly stop the dude from coming over. I silenced my breathing, hugging the tree, my back glued to the trunk. Once he was close, I saw the end of his rifle peek through the large leafy plants and vines. I guess he didn't see me when I saw him pull back his gun before I heard the crunched of dirt slowly fade.
That was until the tracker starting beeping again... Loudly.
Stupid piece of junk.
"Open fire!" One of them shouted.
They started shooting at the poor defenseless tree. I rushed out of there before they could even get the chance. I dashed around them and knocked everyone in the back of their head before they could even decide to turn around. Then I headed the other way and kept moving on quickly. Guess I could forget about being a sneaky ninja with the stupid thing in my pocket. The closer I got, the faster it beeped.
I jumped into a clearing and ran into a ton of creeps. They all fired their gun at me. I rushed at the closest one and ripped the gun from his arm and threw him over my shoulder and slammed my foot on to his chest. I raised the gun and fired it at their legs, shooting three of them in the leg. I threw the gun at the fourth and rushed the last one, grabbing him by the face.
He screamed a bit for his life, probably thinking I was going to kill him but that wasn't the case as a mild sting surged through the bones in my arm. His face suddenly froze over into a block of ice. He stumbled back, grabbing at his head but couldn't seem to keep his balance as he fell to the ground. Lucky me, the ice didn't break.
I looked around now. There were three wounded, two unconscious and one with an ice cube for a head that was probably having the worst brain freeze of his life. I snickered at the thought and turn to run again. The beeping went incredibly fast now so this girl had to be close.
I crept quietly through the trees until I saw movement up ahead. I stopped and waited until who or whatever came into view. I watched a girl with light brown skin and long messy hair, stumble over to a tree, clutching her shoulder, breathing heavily. She plopped down next to it and didn't move after that. I assumed that this had to be the escapee.
Carefully, I took a step out from behind the tree were I sat. She still hadn't moved and I started to worry. I ran over to the girl and look her over. She had a star marked under her left eye. That struck up an old memory, but I shook my head. "Are you okay?" I asked crouching beside her. I watched as her eyes closed and her body went slack. "Hey!" I tried to get her to wake up but, she wouldn't even budge.
"Stand back 0956!"
I flinched, and looked up to found tons of soldiers. I had been surrounded without even knowing it.
"Put your hand over your head and come quietly!" One of them shouted.
I glared around at them, tucking my hands slowly under the girl preparing to pick her up and get out quick. I only had one shot. If I made the wrong move, me, her or both of us would be killed but, I wanted to believe that we were needed alive.
"This is your last warning!"
I bit my lip and grabbed her fast. Guns fired immediately. I threw up four icy walls around us and shot them all away. They slammed into the troops and everyone was knocked back. The walls shattered on contact, sending shards everywhere. I took this chance to disappear and ran fast, about to jump back to the forest-- back home, but suddenly something pierced my back and I went plummeting into dirt on my face.
I ended up on the ground in the forest clearing. I reached for the spot on my back that stung with pain. I pulled back my hand, dark, red blood dripped from it into the sand. I looked around to make sure I was where I intended to go and relaxed when I saw Hailey running towards me.
"Gunner!" She cried, a group of little boys following her. "Gunner, are you okay?!"
I nodded and pulled the unconscious girl over me. "Take care of her..." I choked out, getting up on my feet.
"But… what about you... you're hurt!" She pointed out the bullet wound were I'd been shot. That thing with through clean as I found a hole sprouting form my chest.
"I'm fine..." I assured trying to wobble away but found myself collapsing again. Honestly I can't remember what happened next. It was just a blur of Hailey's face and a muffle of her voice and the other boys' possibly calling name repeatedly.
